So that is, technically speaking, one possibility.

And you see teams like Atlanta doing that with Carlos Carrasco.

That's why they do it.

It's because then you kind of circumvent that rule where a player has to be in the minors for X number of days.

Hopefully it's not literal paper, although I know for their actual contract, they sign it, but hopefully otherwise it's just, you know, a little PDF, a little email, DocuSign.
