So what's happening with Democratic politicians?
If most Democrats aren't totally nuts, then why are so many major politicians who are Democrats moving in the direction of the crazies?
The answer is that beneath the veneer of rational moderation, politicians are sensing something.
And it's a real thing, a grievance-based view of the world that can be exploited for votes.
The most important statistic from that Manhattan Institute poll concerns conspiratorial thinking.
Conspiratorial thinking, as we've talked about a lot on the show is a hallmark of grievance culture.
When you believe the system is screwing you over, you tend to also believe that the system is lying to you about everything.
Now, again, there is a difference between conspiracies and conspiracy thinking.
Conspiracies actually exist in the real world.
There is evidence for these conspiracies.
You can uncover that evidence.
You can explicate what is happening.
Conspiratorial thinking suggests that in the absence of any evidence...
There must be some evil cadre of people manipulating the system and lying to you.
And this has become incredibly prevalent among Democrats.
