The chief advocate for the Alliance for Gambling Reform, Tim Costello, said that the reforms fall short of the inquiry's recommendations.
They're going back to the initial inquiry from Peter Murphy saying
He said the onus of protecting children should be squarely on gambling companies and the platforms.
And he called out one of the reforms in particular, the one that I talked about where the government is proposing a limit of three ads per hour from 6am to 8.30pm.
Tim Costello said imagine three cigarette ads per hour.
I will also read out what Peter Murphy's widower, Rod Glover, said.
In a LinkedIn post he said that Peter Murphy would be very proud of today's progress and he said that the outcome achieved is not perfect but policy rarely is.
Until, well, A, the first step now is that the government actually needs to introduce legislation with these reforms in that legislation.
Once they do that, they then need the support of either the opposition or a minor party or any of the independents on the crossbench in the Senate.
They have enough support in the lower house.
They don't in the Senate.
So that will now need to happen.
If it does pass, their plan is for it to come into effect from the start of next year, from the 1st of January, 2027.
I would say from looking at the criticism that is out there, if we look at the Coalition's criticism, it is that this is delayed response and this is a hypocritical response.
They haven't flat out rejected it.
It's not an ideological opposition to it.
So they could be the most likely to support it.
