Good morning and welcome to The Daily Oz. It's Tuesday the 14th of April. I'm Billie Fitzsimons. I'm Zara Seidler. In case you missed it, the federal government announced it intends to introduce a ban on several forms of gambling ads. It will mean no gambling ads on players' uniforms, in stadiums or with celebrities. But there has been a lot of criticism about it.

Chapter 2: What recent gambling ad reforms has the Federal Government proposed?

108.473 - 110.836 Zara Seidler

I think it must have been a fortnight ago now?

0

110.856 - 112.118 Billi FitzSimons

It was earlier this month.

0

112.098 - 131.997 Zara Seidler

Yeah. And so today, I think let's catch everyone up to speed, understand what everyone's saying about these reforms and what they actually are. In order to do that, though, I think that it is helpful to paint a bit of a picture about the state of gambling in Australia, because I think once you understand that, you understand why there is so much pressure to act.

0

132.365 - 145.225 Billi FitzSimons

Yeah, every time we have spoken about gambling on the podcast over the years, it always shocks me the fact that Australia has the highest gambling losses per person in the world.

0

145.245 - 163.593 Billi FitzSimons

So we are the worst in the world when it comes to gambling and that is why it is such a huge issue and why there has been so much pressure on the government, not just the government today but on governments in the past as well, to act on limiting how much gambling ads there are out there.

163.854 - 174.131 Billi FitzSimons

And also what's surprising to learn is that New South Wales in particular has the worst losses per capita in Australia, which therefore means in the world.

174.732 - 181.103 Zara Seidler

It is pretty staggering when you think about that and the numbers themselves. What sort of numbers are we talking about here?

181.083 - 199.615 Billi FitzSimons

So I have it in front of me. So a report published by the government in 2023 says recent estimates suggest that Australians lose approximately $25 billion on legal forms of gambling every year, which represents the largest per capita losses in the world, as I said.

199.595 - 220.957 Zara Seidler

And thinking about the fact that like Las Vegas exists... Yes. ...and we're still somehow... Worse than that. Worse than that. It is, yeah. It's pretty unbelievable. So there is clearly a challenge that has been identified... ...through these statistics and a pressure on government to respond... These reforms have been a long time coming, though.

Chapter 3: Why is Australia facing pressure to limit gambling ads?

571.03 - 591.165 Unknown

Okay. So Billie, just before the break, you read out what the government is proposing to do about gambling ads, which is to limit those ads, those online gambling ads, but not to completely eradicate or to completely stop those ads. What has the response to Anthony Albanese and his government's measures actually been?

0

615.255 - 638.63 Billi FitzSimons

It depends which side of the aisle we're talking about, but across the board, they are mainly against it or at least how long it's taken but for different reasons. So I'll first go to the opposition. The Coalition's Shadow Minister for Communications, Sarah Henderson, she criticised Labor for how long it has taken for these reforms to be announced and for it to act on gambling.

0

638.91 - 655.451 Billi FitzSimons

I will say that this isn't the first time that the Labor government has announced gambling reforms. You would hear now at the end of every single gambling ad they have those new sayings at the end. Yeah. So this isn't the first time but specifically on limiting because that was just changing what was in the gambling ads. But they were still there. Exactly.

0

655.671 - 669.525 Billi FitzSimons

So the coalition is very critical of firstly how long it's taken and secondly they say that they introduced a similar bill to this in 2023 which Labor rejected and voted against. So they say that this is very hypocritical from Labor.

670.005 - 670.106 Zara Seidler

Okay.

670.126 - 687.007 Billi FitzSimons

I'll read out an exact quote. So Sarah Henderson said... In 2023, Labor voted against the coalition's legislation to ban gambling advertisements one hour before, during and after live sport. Now the Prime Minister has announced a policy strikingly similar to what he once opposed.

687.307 - 691.934 Zara Seidler

But just clarifying, in 2023, Labor were in government. So this would have been an opposition bill.

692.234 - 710.497 Billi FitzSimons

Exactly. So that's the coalition. Then we have the Greens. They also criticised the announcement saying basically that it didn't go far enough. So Sarah Hansen Young, who's part of the Greens, said we need a complete ban of online advertising gambling. Then if we go to advocates for gambling reform, they have also criticised it.

Chapter 4: What is the timeline of gambling reform discussions in Australia?

961.217 - 969.51 Zara Seidler

We were talking about side hustles before. Imagine being like saving lives and then writing killer books at night. She was a freaking brain disorder doctor.

0

969.57 - 987.936 Billi FitzSimons

Yeah, unbelievable. Unbelievable. Also, if you don't know the movie we're talking about, obviously it's The Housemaid. It was the recent one with Sidney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried. So I didn't know, you did know, but I didn't know that she was writing under a pseudonym. And last week it was revealed her real name, which is Sarah Cohen.

0

988.216 - 992.683 Billi FitzSimons

You probably won't be familiar with that name because she has not been well known until now.

0

992.703 - 999.372 Zara Seidler

Do you think her patients were like, oh my God, I had no idea. She put a wig on and that was supposed to obscure her identity?

0

999.352 - 1020.865 Billi FitzSimons

Yes, and it worked. No, this is literally, this is Hannah Montana in real life. Sorry. So this was all revealed in an exclusive with USA Today that she has been wearing a wig and she has been wearing glasses as part of her plan to hide her real identity. She does actually wear glasses in real life, but I think she has her author ones and then her private life ones.

1020.885 - 1024.731 Zara Seidler

It's like very clearly a wig. Not to hop on here, but it's a bad wig.

1024.751 - 1028.356 Billi FitzSimons

But I think the purpose of it is that you just can't see who she is underneath.

1028.617 - 1028.717

Sure.

1028.697 - 1044.967 Billi FitzSimons

And my favourite part, my favourite tidbit of the tidbit is that her colleagues found out that she was Freda McFadden and kept the secret for her. And it's just all Hannah Montana and I love it. Do you have anything you want to tell me? That I'm not really Billy Fitzsimons?
