So NASA offers their explanation about what happened to the atmosphere.
If you used to have a thick, breathable atmosphere, close to, approximately close to what we have here on Earth, why is it gone now?
And their explanation is that the solar wind has stripped it away.
Which makes sense on the surface.
The solar wind is much stronger than people realize.
You know, here on Earth, we're protected by a very thick atmosphere and a strong magnetosphere, magnetic field, I guess you'd say.
And they say, NASA will say, because Mars has a very weak magnetic field, almost non-existent, but still a little there, it can no longer protect the planet from the solar wind.
but the numbers don't add up.
Research suggests that the magnetic field has nothing to do with it.
The magnetic field doesn't make a difference when determining how much of the solar wind, how much solar wind can strip away the atmosphere.
We've got research papers published on that.
And on top of that,
The rate at which the solar wind, it is stripping it away a little by little, but the rate at which it's stripping away, well, the nearly complete loss of the atmosphere of Mars cannot be attributed to the solar wind stripping.
Mars has this giant scar on it, Valles Marineris.
It's the size of the United States.
That's huge.
And this scar... I'll actually go back a few here, Ryan.
You can see it here.
It's actually...
in the laboratory.
