Should things be labeled with how long they're going to last?
That is the question.
Carmi Levy, a technology analyst, is here to discuss that.
It is time for technology time.
That's what time it is.
Carmi, welcome in.
So walk me through this one.
What exactly would we want to see?
Like, I want to know when my Apple MacBook is going to die, you know?
And I feel like these big companies can obsolete their tech so quickly these days.
It's so crazy to me that they can just obsolete tech, these companies.
Sure, I get what you're saying, but these manufacturers could release the specs so that nerds in the community could write their own software for it.
It might sound foreign to people, but this happens a lot.
Like old iPads, sorry, iPods, the ones with the scroll wheel and the black and white screen.
There are open source free pieces of software that people in the nerd community write, and it's relatively secure.
Behind the scenes, it uses recent software.
It's sad that so much e-waste goes to the dump because manufacturers decide they want everyone to upgrade for more money so they can make more money.
You know, I kind of get it from both angles, but I think it could be really good for the consumer to know when they buy something, when it'll go obsolete.
That's all I'm saying.
I think it's a good piece of legislation.
