I had a very vivid memory of my eyes focused on that campfire.
And that was all that I was.
That was my goal.
My objective was to reach that site because that was the only indicator of where a campsite was without that campfire.
You know, the shoreline is identical at night.
It's dark.
Well, this was the kicker when we got to shore.
The three of us were standing in the sand.
I reached down in the canoe and I picked up the flashlight again and I gave it another SOS.
But this time, all it did was it just went away from us to the opposite side of the lake.
Once it got to the exact opposite side of the lake, it ascended up and away at a 45-degree angle.
And it was only about 40 feet above the surface of the water.
