This is a story that isn't in the doc, but it made me laugh.

Gary wrote a script for Welcome Back, Cotter, and then he got in a terrible car accident, a really bad car accident, and almost died and had this near-death experience.

And then Gary called the head writer there, and he said, if you would say that you were about to hire me to be a full-time staff writer, I would get a lot of insurance money because I can't work because I'm injured.

And the writer who didn't think Gary was a great writer said, so but you definitely can't write on the show.

And Gary said, yeah, he goes, OK, well, then you could tell them I was going to hire you.

Right.
