I think my dad and grandfather would have taken different approaches to it, but I think as far as serving the fans and as far as being on the lips of the fans, because those are the people we're working for, I think they would have enjoyed that kind of interaction if they were able to take part in that.

Well, we used to say when I was doing the Cubs games, the closest thing that we came to that was on the radio side on WGN when Pat Hughes and Ron Santos worked together for so long.

And we always used to say the most terrifying words in Cubs radio broadcasting history were,

pat i got a fax here and ron santa would get a fax from a fan asking some inane question and ronnie would go off on some crazy tangent there are a zillion examples of that on youtube you can find them um you know he he just had a unique way of going off the rails and pat was the perfect straight man for that so pat was the pat was the the um uh the entity that was and is x and

And Ron Sando was the person furiously scribbling away his chain of thoughts in the middle of a baseball game.

And it made baseball purists go crazy, I'm sure.

But as entertainers, which is what we are, we're in the entertainment business, not the baseball business.

Ron Sando did it as well as anybody because he just had this amazingly, naive is the wrong word, but this amazingly innocent approach of saying what came to mind,

letting it fly, and people loved it.

It was great.

People forget I was originally hired by the Cardinals about 20 years ago, 25 years ago.

They wanted to recreate the Buck and Kerry deal in St.

Louis.

And I couldn't take the job for myriad reasons.

And Joe was working there doing games on radio and TV.

But it was fun.

You know, look, Harry and Jack were, I think, in their era, the best broadcasting duo in the history of our game.

And they were empowered in large part by that remarkable signal that
