Thomas could have continued working for the Boulder PD. There's a lot of people like, oh, he was going to be fired for the way he like. Probably not, actually, because they had no decent detectives like firing him. He was an undercover undercover narcotics cop before. Obviously, he can't do that anymore. His cover is blown. He can never go undercover.

At that point, he was also one of their only detectives who had any experience with homicide.

So, I mean, getting rid of him, that would have been a gut punch to the department. It would have lowered morale for the people who were on his side.

It's hard to get convictions on the books when you keep pleading them down before you even charge the person. I think it was something like, well, it was over a 90% plea rate. Imagine if... And for things that were, in fact, homicides, cocaine dealing, I mean, he got reprimanded for breaking up a prostitution ring.

And, you know, like, opinions on sex work aside, prostitution rings that run out of hotels... are typically not the kind of thing that even if you are a rather liberally minded person in that sense, those are trafficking. That's different. That's not OnlyFans. It's almost always going to be trafficking. Somebody is organizing this, which means that somebody's in charge.

That is different than being a cam model or an OnlyFans model or something like that. There's almost always some level of abuse somewhere. This is not an issue of... Some cops being, you know, morally conservative and the DA being morally liberal. This is an issue of, like, that's trafficking. And they told him not to look at prostitution cases anymore unless there were complaints.

Which, of course, like, who's... The clients aren't going to complain. And the people who aren't clients probably aren't aware it's happening.

Oh, God. I mean, it sounds like that's kind of what it was for a few years after this case wrapped up. Yeah. But... Yeah, I mean, I look at everything you look at. It's Thomas's whole point in writing the book because and this is the part that pisses me off. Even if he was going to be fired from that department, he could have resigned. He could have gone back to Wheat Ridge.

He could have gone to another big city. I mean, he would have been the kind of cop that like New York, Philadelphia, Boston, Chicago, L.A., any of those cities would have loved a cop like him.

Boulder, not so much. Boulder doesn't want hard-hitting stuff. Boulder is a nice, pleasant, low-crime area where bad things just don't happen. And if you have cops who aren't going to stand for the DA brushing aside any bad things so that it looks like everything's okay, that's not going to jive. The chief they brought in proves it. Chief Kobe? I mean, I'm sure he was a nice guy.
