From what I can see, there's no explicit confirmation that Tolkien was inspired by this story in particular, but there have been a number of people making the connection and the similarity of themes and there are people saying he might have been inspired by it, but nothing concrete.

mm-hmm it was also funny you know his name's hudson but i've never once heard the name hudson shortened to hud and yet it was so fitting for this man i was just like he's a hud it really was really was actually yeah i also like her going you mean hug hug okay i just kept thinking of hug the whole time yeah
that conversation was so painful when he's trying to flirt with her she's like i don't even know the guy i don't i don't need to do this and she tries to ask for his business card while hud and jason try to talk to rob a brief blackout occurs and the building shakes
Yeah, that was, seeing that shot, it just brought back all the memories of the marketing because that was the money shot.
That was everywhere.
And I was like, oh, I forgot about this.
And maybe it's just like the found footage nature of the movie helps put you in this mindset.
But the entire time I just kept thinking like, what would I be doing?
How would I handle the situation?
