Rob's best friend Hudson, known as Hud, is given a camera by Jason and the responsibility of recording final goodbyes from family and friends at the party, but instead unsuccessfully flirts with his crush Arlena. Beth arrives with a date, Travis, which upsets Rob.
To his dismay, he realizes Hud is taping over footage of him and Beth, including their trip to Coney Island, which shows up throughout the film. Lily reveals that Rob and Beth slept together several weeks earlier, which Hudson then shares with others at the party, making the matter worse. Shares with everybody, man. Yep. Yep. Rob provokes Beth and her date into leaving the party.
Yeah, he runs around telling everyone, did you know? Did you know? Did you know? Which I will say like HUD is a great character behind the camera because I don't know, that's the personality and the quips that you get throughout the film by the person that's holding the camera and the fear. You know, it all kind of like works out pretty well.
You don't want the person behind the camera being too dull.

Chapter 2: How do the characters' relationships evolve during the party scene?
Yeah. Yeah.
You need somebody to keep it going in some way. mm-hmm it was also funny you know his name's hudson but i've never once heard the name hudson shortened to hud and yet it was so fitting for this man i was just like he's a hud it really was really was actually yeah i also like her going you mean hug hug okay i just kept thinking of hug the whole time yeah
that conversation was so painful when he's trying to flirt with her she's like i don't even know the guy i don't i don't need to do this and she tries to ask for his business card while hud and jason try to talk to rob a brief blackout occurs and the building shakes
When the power returns, everyone turns on the local news, where the anchor explains that an earthquake has occurred and an oil tanker has capsized in the bay off Lower Manhattan. Curious partygoers and apartment dwellers go up to the roof to spot the disaster, where they witness an explosion in Lower Manhattan. As fire and debris begin to rain down, the partygoers flee to the streets below.
The head of the Statue of Liberty crashes down into the streets beside them.
hud records a glimpse of what appears to be a giant monster moving through the city i love it i love it because it just feels so surreal you know if you hit an earthquake and you're in new york you have access you're gonna go to the rooftop you hear on the news things are happening you want to go see everyone's wants everyone's rubbernecking you know what i mean where where where only to just kick things off into just absolute chaos you know yeah the i think is a great start
it's a it's a great start it throws you right in there's no waiting around but also the instinct to go to the roof in hindsight now this is i this might be my first time re-watching it at least in a long long time but looking back now i'm like don't go to the freaking roof get to the ground go get underground get out of here uh you know like just knowing that the size of the thing coming you know like this building could go down but it's so interesting also there's an earthquake and you go up oh yeah that was my thought
But also like, you're right. It is the natural instinct for everybody to be like, well, let me stick my head out there and let me, let me get a gander. Oh yeah. I mean, traffic slows down just because there's cars just outside the lane and stuff like that.

Chapter 3: What happens when the disaster strikes in Cloverfield?
And it's because everyone's like, oh, I'm like, what happened? How bad is it? Yeah. The part that comes next though, like I'll never forget that. That was probably one of the coolest parts of the trailer, but like what comes crashing down the road, just seeing that it sets the tone so well for the rest of the movie.
Yeah, that was, seeing that shot, it just brought back all the memories of the marketing because that was the money shot. That was everywhere. And I was like, oh, I forgot about this. Oh my God. And maybe it's just like the found footage nature of the movie helps put you in this mindset.
Chapter 4: How does the found footage style enhance the viewer's experience?
But the entire time I just kept thinking like, what would I be doing? How would I handle the situation? And it just, I don't know why, because I don't usually do that, at least to this extent when I'm watching horror movies. But just every time I'm just like, okay, they're doing this and like, that's really dumb.
Chapter 5: What are the characters' instincts during the chaos of the monster attack?
But also, what would I do? You know, talking about different solutions and plans. It's very, you can put yourself in it, right? Yeah. And maybe again, it is the found footage and it just feels that much more tangible.
Chapter 6: How does the movie's marketing contribute to its legacy?
Yeah. Like it feels more relatable because it is such a personal POV, I guess.
