I think when you negotiate your salary, you should actually make the conversation really about how you came up with the number, how you did the research, but also how did they do their research? How did they decide that this is why you're lower on that pay band? Because there's always a range of what you could make. Why did they decide it wasn't the top? So make it about the method.
