He said, well, you know, I can grow that.
I said, you can buy corn cheaper than you can grow it most years.
You know, you need to really pencil that because if you can get cheap gain on grass that's already established and you can irrigate it and keep it growing, buy your corn, you know, versus โ Yeah, you don't have to make it all.
Yeah, you don't have โ exactly.
And a lot of people don't realize that.
It's like we get one of the biggest โ
pieces of advice I would say we get is like, in our little feed lot, I feed whole corn, my ration is 90% whole corn, 10% chopped or ground hay that I grind through my diet mixer, and then we use a product called Beef Trape made by ADM.
Our steers consistently gain four plus pounds a day, convert around six to six and a half, cost of gain right now around 70 to 75 cents, pretty cheap cost of gain on finishing steers.
And they're like, but I have to haul my corn in.
They're like, well, you need to put up a grain bin.
Well, yeah, that sounds great, except I'm going to have to spend $25,000 or $30,000 to set up a grain bin.
And then I've got to run electricity to it.
And then I've got to buy augers.
And then I've got to buy another tractor if I'm not going to have electricity to auger it in with.
And then...
You know, oh, well, just put you in an overhead bulk bin.
Okay, but now I've got to find a trucker that has an auger trailer to bring it and fill it.
Now I'm paying where I get to go out seven miles down the road with a 400-bushel grain cart that I pull behind my pickup.
and buy it for commodity prices.
It's cheaper for me to make a trip with my trailer once or twice a month and get 400 bushels than it is to put in an overhead bin and pay the trucking to have somebody.
