You haven't seen something like this in a very, very long time.
Part of this is the fact that this is the first American Pope.
This is a Pope who speaks English and is regularly played speaking English on many of the TV shows that we know that Donald Trump watches.
But Pope Leo is the leader of, like Megyn Kelly said, 1.4 billion Catholics all around the world, including Melania Trump, including JD Vance, including Marco Rubio, many people in Donald Trump's inner orbit.
And I think Donald Trump has made a very critical mistake in trying to go after Pope Leo
as a political figure when Catholics don't see him that way.
Of course, this is Pope Leo engaging in politics to go after and to comment on any world leader in this way is, of course, engaging in some level of political debate.
But he's the leader of a religious movement that stakes its claim on adhering to what the Pope says without question.
And to go after the Pope in this way is,
isn't something that i think most catholics at least the united states are going to easily forgive and wave away the other element of that being the leadership of the catholic church in the united states has been appointed by another liberal of the catholic church by pope francis this isn't the same thing as as in the first trump term when pope francis
would sort of make vague comments about the Trump administration and Donald Trump himself.
And that could kind of be waved away because a bishop of an American city would act as a counterweight and say, that's not really what we believe.
Now, the bishops of most American Catholic areas and churches
are from the same sort of Francis lineage and are backing up and are giving public interviews saying that they are siding with the Pope.
And it's very difficult for any Catholic, regardless of their side on politics, to say that Pope Leo doesn't understand American politics.
That's something that they could easily wave off for Pope Francis.
But
Pope Leo was born in the suburbs of Chicago.
He very much understands the American political landscape.
And the fact that he's willing to speak out this publicly, I think says a lot about how far Pope Leo is going to be willing to go.
