House Speaker Mike Johnson says he expects a vote on a Senate-passed bill in the House to fully fund the federal government by Tuesday.

However, he expects there will be a two-week window to negotiate the funding for the Department of Homeland Security and reforms Democrats are seeking on immigration and customs enforcement.

NPR's immigration policy correspondent, Jimena Bustillo, reports that an agreement is complicated by the Republicans' narrow control of the House.

Democrats say they want the ICE reforms after two Minnesota residents were shot and killed by ICE agents last month.

Friday, the Senate passed by a wide margin the nearly $1.3 trillion federal spending bill.

Israeli authorities say preparations are underway to reopen the Gaza main border crossing.

Reopening the crossing is a major step in advancing a ceasefire agreement.
