He said, I'd like to talk to scientists.
And I had just become a journalist at the New York Times in the science desk.
And so I started sending him that section of the New York Times, and it ended up in a series of dialogues that I moderated some of.
between the Dalai Lama and scientists.
And I always admired his upbeat manner.
Talk about unflappable.
I think he really was a model of that.
I was taken by him, not on that first meeting, by the way, but rather slowly as I got to know him.
I was able to mobilize scientists who wanted to meet with him, and that was a really important agenda.
He used to have lunch, for example, when he was in London with a guy who was famous in quantum physics.
He's a kind of self-taught scientist.
scientist really.
And so he's always made it a point to go out of his way and I could help him with that.
And I think that cemented our relationship very early on.
Focus is really about attention.
And if you think about social media, TikTok, Instagram, and so on, they're designed to capture your attention and to keep it.
