My partner, Bill, has a morning practice.
Despite being an atheist, he has spiritual practices.
One of them, he says two things to himself out loud every single day while shaving.
And he says it's very important that they're out loud.
I don't shave every day, so I can't do it.
There you go.
One is I live in the best of all possible worlds.
Now, as an existential atheist, he says, look, I can also say I live in the world.
I live in the worst world.
I live in the only world I notice.
But actually, it turns out because bias matters, I want to bias things in my favor.
If I live in the best of all possible worlds, my chance of catching good things goes way up because I've pre-biased my attention to positive outcomes.
Thing one.
Thing two, everything I do today, I choose to do.
So I announce my agency to myself.
Why am I going to this darn meeting?
Oh, because I scheduled it.
Why am I going to the DMV?
Because I chose not to file on time, and so now I'm doing this thing.
So I just own my life.
