This is a real case, and it sounds like Metropolis wearing a business suit.

In January 2024, a finance employee at Arup, a British engineering firm, was tricked into transferring HK$100 million, roughly $25.6 million.

The employee believed they had joined a video meeting with senior colleagues, including a CFO figure.

But the meeting used fake voices and images to impersonate company leaders.

Arup later confirmed the fraud and said its internal systems, project delivery and financial stability were not affected.

This is the modern fake Maria problem.

In Metropolis, the robot Maria is dangerous because people believe she is the real Maria.

She borrows human trust.

In this Arup case, the criminals did something similar.

They did not just send a strange email saying, hello, please transfer millions, totally normal.

They created the feeling of a real meeting, familiar faces, familiar authority, familiar pressure.

And that is the scary AI lesson.

AI does not need to be conscious to manipulate us.
