Dougal was one of those dreamers, and he always hoped for the best.
And, you know, my mum was the opposite.
She was conservative.
Christian, my dad was an atheist, and she had a lot of doubts and it took quite a bit of convincing, even in Falmouth, that this was a good idea.
She came round eventually, yeah.
I think Dougal conned her a bit with this, we'll get to the Caribbean, and if it's really that bad, we can always come back from the Caribbean.
But of course, we, as the kids,
We're thinking to hell with that.
We're going around the world.
We really wanted to go around the world, but we didn't want to just go to the Caribbean and come back next winter, you know what I mean?
I was quite a courageous sort of young lad, 16 years old.
I was very strong and fit.
I remember sailing out of the protective harbour of Falmouth out into the mouth of the port and the first wave hit the Lusat and spray came over the boat, you know.
And that scared me.
I mean, I was, as I say, it took a lot to scare me, but I was scared of that.
And I looked back at Dougal
and he was stamping his feet on the cockpit floor, shouting, yee-haw!
We're like, we're away!
Nothing can stop us now!
