it's not as nice as that it is the trillions of bacteria viruses fungi microbes that live in our gut and should be quite helpful to us the bacteria in particular are really important to how we digest food our mood our immune system lots of different things and it is seeded we think from
from the minute we're born.
So a vaginal delivery for a baby will introduce vaginal bacteria into that baby's gut.
A caesarean section delivery for a baby will introduce skin bacteria into that baby's gut.
There's a theory actually saying we used to think that when a baby was inside its mum as a foetus, that their gut was quite sterile.
But there might be, and again, it's just a theory at the moment.
