And one of the surprising things that I found that really plays such a central role in blood glucose regulation is a different sugar called fructose. But I think interestingly, we can look at how these changes in our gut bacteria brought on by, for example, consumption of fructose and therefore leading to higher levels of insulin and blood sugar may have been in our hunter-gatherer days quite adaptive. Because think about it, when did we eat fructose? When did we have fruit sugar?
