There are cells.
And the cells in your brain have many things in common with the cells in your heart, your skin, your kidney, your liver.
And there are some principles that apply to all of them.
And just like you can do things to take care of your heart, there are specific things you could do to take care of your brain.
We know absolutely for sure that there are many things you could do to slow the cognitive decline that may happen with aging.
This began when I was a resident at Johns Hopkins.
I had seen many patients who had cognitive decline and were diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease.
But when I looked at the charts, they had diabetes.
they had back pain, they were taking medications that were sedating, they had the sleep apnea, they had many conditions that we know for sure reduce cognitive function.
As I mentioned to you earlier, your brain is a tissue, and if you don't take care of it, if there's not oxygen, it's not enough nutrients, it will not function well.
And I thought to myself, well, why are we labeling them as Alzheimer's disease?
They have super problems in their brain.
This was back in 2002.
And that's when I thought we need to change things.
This is not right.
We shouldn't give a label of Alzheimer's because when you tell someone they have Alzheimer's disease, that's the end of it for them.
They're just getting ready to have a miserable life.
And I felt like that's not right.
So I wrote my first book in 2002 while I was still a resident at Johns Hopkins.
And the title was Memory Cure.
