It saved people from being burned at the stake.
And here's why.

The church's position on heresy is what Christ said.
You know, if your brother sins against you, go and bring another so there'll be a witness.
If he doesn't listen to them, then take him to the church.
If he doesn't listen to the church, treat him as you would a tax collector.
And so...
The church's position always was, if you're really determined not to believe what we believe, then you're out.
You're not part of us anymore.
You're excommunicated.
That's the sum total of the church's penalty for heresy.
