You remember he was serving time in the UK where he was caught in what was termed at the time a supermarket of weapons, all these automatic guns and so on.
So when he came out, he's saying that this house was bought with money from his granny, which he had gotten from running stalls and from her pension.
So, you know, on the face of it, 45 grand.
The granny died or just given him the money?
No, apparently he had given him the money.
And there's a couple of notice parties attached to the case.
It's not just his name on it, but that was explained because it was basically the cabber saying that it was bought through a person using their name so he could hide that it belonged to him.
Now, in his evidence, apparently he's going to say that he had bought the property and he didn't want his name attached to it because of the feuding and wanted, as it was said in court, to enjoy the property, enjoy the peace of the property.
And so he didn't want people to know that he owned it.
So this is why that there was no nefarious reasons why he was doing it.
So, I mean, there was a little bit about stuff I suppose we already know.
So, Council for Cal, they were opposing the legal application, the legal aid application, describing as a leading member of the McCarthy-Dunton gang, saying that it was his brother-in-law who was used to acquire, his name that was used to acquire the house.
And they pointed out that McCarthy accepts that the 45,000 that was used to buy the house came from his grandmother.
But at the same time, it still doesn't explain the provenance of the money.
Like, where did she get it?
The idea that loosely that it came from
from her running stalls and her pension is not really enough to explain where 45 grand came from.
They basically saying, they pushed back on his counsel saying it was a complex case, saying that it wasn't a complex case at all.
It was quite simple to explain, you know, that the money, they're going to say the money came from, you know, the proceeds of crime.
You know, the guy was recognized as being the leader of one of the biggest drugs gangs in Limerick at the time.
