The officer arresting him said that as soon as Wayne answered the door and saw that it was the police, all the colour drained from his face.
He went completely grey.
He knew it was over.
After initially telling police officers that he had never met Sarah and has absolutely nothing to do with her disappearance, Wayne Cousins rather quickly changes his story.
He tells police that he's in a lot of debt and has recently been in contact with a gang who I presume had promised him money in exchange for carrying out their dirty work for them.
Without explicitly saying it, Wayne Cousins just implied to the police that he had kidnapped Sarah Everard in order to appease this gang who would threaten to come back for his family if he didn't follow their orders.
It was a tall tale and I'm sure police had their doubts about its validity right there in that moment.
But regardless, they let him continue trying to explain himself and describe the situation that he was caught up in.
He says that he was given the name of a place to take her and so he did.
And then he's saying, but that's all I know.
That's all I can tell you.
Already it's suspicious just how little detail he can give about the gang or about the day that he actually carried this out.
If you had actually been ordered to human traffic a poor innocent woman off the street, surely you would sound a little bit more shaken up than Wayne Cousins sounds in these clips.
He recounts the very moment that the men came to collect Sarah from him, but weirdly, he doesn't seem to say anything about Sarah herself.
There's nothing about how she reacted at all.
He doesn't mention anything that she said or did.
Not to mention, he doesn't explain how he got her in his car in the first place, what he said to her to make her get in, or where she thought she was going with him.
So many large portions of his story and major details are missing.
But then he tells police he can vaguely remember where he dropped Sarah off, if they want to know.
If Wayne Cousins is telling the truth about this human trafficking gang that are pulling people in to kidnap women off the streets for them, then police need to get investigating this right away.
