Let's pick back up with today's case.
Now that police have recovered Sarah's body and identified her killer, they need to fill in the gaps of what actually happened on that night, March 3rd, 2021.
So by this point in the investigation, police had begun gathering intel and evidence surrounding Wayne Cousins.
They wanted to piece together his movements in the lead up to the murder so that they could try to figure out how he had crossed paths with Sarah Everard and why he had done what he'd done.
Well, they already knew that he had specifically hired a car to carry out this attack in, so there's an immediate level of premeditation, but they had no idea at this point just how far back that premeditation went.
On February 10th, almost one whole month before Sarah's murder, Wayne Cousins had gone on Amazon and purchased a standard issue police handcuff key for ยฃ2.50.
Clearly intended for personal use since it didn't go through his work.
Why would he need a spare handcuff key?
And on top of that, in the two months before the murder, so this is as far back as January, Cousins was found to have driven the 80 mile journey from Kent to London for no real reason on at least three different occasions.
Police believe that this was him scoping out the areas, looking for some quiet, darker roads where he might be able to one day strike.
And in the meantime, while he was driving those roads, he's probably just fantasizing and trying to get some sort of high from driving the roads that he would one day take when he did murder someone.
Clearly, he had decided on March 3rd, or even sooner, that the time had come.
He was ready to act on his urges and attack a vulnerable woman.
Cousins waited until a day that he had off from work, but he told his wife that he was working that day so that she wouldn't worry or get suspicious when he didn't return home.
In fact, he'd even written on their family calendar that he was gonna be working overtime that day.
even more coverage, buying even more time where people won't wonder where he is.
