And so this shows us a divine intervention of God's judgment and what his mercy looks like. God's judgment is a response to our sin. But God's judgment isn't necessarily something that he takes pleasure in. I'm going to get to that in a moment. God takes pleasure in mercy.

So God's response will always be judgment whenever we fail to seek his heart in repentance and to fulfill his will and do the things of the kingdom. It will always be God's will and his desire to extend out mercy. But he extends mercy out to those who are repentant and to those who want to fulfill the things of God.

And why did God give Joel this imagery? Because back in these times, in biblical times, Usually whenever the Israelites or the people of God were mourning and grieving and wanted to be an act of repentance, they would quite literally tear their clothes for a physical symbol to show God that they were repentant.

And so as I'm reading the scripture, it shows me, and God has just given me a parallel, that there are people who are only just tearing their garments, but never tearing their hearts for God. And And at the core, that's what repentance is. It's just not a physical tearing. It's an internal one.

It's understanding that there is a humility that needs to be accessed by the tearing of your flesh, by standing in a posture of humility. And not standing in a place of self-glorification, but rather giving yourself onto God fully. And so when God says to rend your hearts and not just your garments, He's asking us to strip ourselves from all selfish ambition and to pursue His will.

And when we pursue His will, and when we seek repentance, we will have repentance. restoration or we will have restoration in response to the repentance that God is calling us to, to give back to him.
