I mean, I used to say, if you were gay in the 1950s, where you figured this out was in the library, where you looked through the card.
There was no place to find it.
It didn't exist in the culture, you know, in a small town.
Do you remember first hearing the word lesbian?
I don't remember hearing the word first.
I don't remember the first time, but I do know that my friends who grew up in New York City, they're completely different.
You know, even ones who are older than me.
Say, what are you talking about?
But this is a small town.
So in your head, did it worry you?
Very much.
I remember very vividly.
I was in the backyard.
I was reading a book.
And I remember exactly this thought.
Well, I guess if there's such a thing as lesbians, someone has to be them.
But why does it have to be me?
Because I realized I could not live this life.
