So I joined a sailing school and I had a lot of lessons.
And then they said we'd run firelight races down at Rushcutters Bay.
So I started doing that.
So my typical day would be I'd knock off work, I'd go to the beach.
Then I'd read all the papers and have coffee in Newtown and then I'd be the first person at the yacht club for the races, the twilight races in the afternoon.
It was like the happiest days of my life, honestly.
It was fantastic.
There was quite a bit of interest at the York Club in what was going on where I worked, but I just got on sailing pretty much.
I used to sail on one boat.
It was called Wind Charmer, WC for short, and the women on that boat used to call themselves the Wicked Chicks.
So I was the only bloke, so I was a Wicked Chick, and it was fun.
I don't know.
I think it would have been around 1996, probably around the time John Howard came to power.
We got sold to Leighton's and someone decided to come up with the idea of having an incentive scheme at work.
So instead of just doing 200 metres per man, after you'd done that, you got paid per metre.
So, yeah, output went up quite considerably after that.
I had a friend who'd moved to London.
He'd met a Scottish girl and decided to go over there.
And I was getting a bit sick of Sydney, so I just thought I might as well head over and I've got somewhere to stay.
So I arrived at Heathrow Airport.
