lasted beyond the cricket field and I've been lucky enough to go to Pakistan a number of times I went as a player but after I retired I went back and worked at the National Cricket Academy for some time in 2004 and I thought it would be rude of me to be in his country and not make contact so I caught up with Imran in 2004 and that was when he told me about his foray into politics and
I was quite incredulous, really.
Why would you do such a thing?
And I'll never forget the words.
He said, I want my country to be the country that it can be.
And that was quite profound.
I was then back in Pakistan as coach of India in 2006.
And again, I made a point of catching up with him.
And at that stage, he had tried and failed to get seats in parliament.
And I spoke to him about that and said, that must be disappointing.
And he said, Greg, life and politics goes in seven year cycles.
