They were like, can you add some kind of safety to this gun so it can be rendered safe to be reholstered?
That was when the 1911 A1 came out.
They widened the spur, went with a different trigger, different mainspring housing.
There was a different ejection port.
There was a lot of little fundamental changes on the A1, but
John Browning designed that gun to be carried a number of ways safely.
Now, it does not need a thumb safety to be carried in condition one safely because it's got a grip safety.
