There's a thing with guys where you don't want to be seen with a guy who is a drag on you socially or who creeps out the wrong people.
And there's a thing with this relationship where they're both sort of unpopular in a way.
We don't really know to what extent.
And I think when a guy realizes they're with another guy that maybe makes them seem sadder or less socially upwardly mobile, they immediately get into this very cringe mode of like, I've got to get away from this guy.
I mean like the moment in the story that I think was, is like most was productive for me emotionally, like made me like help.
I felt like I was working something out was when he's at his worst, his low point of like, I have got to get away from Howard.
And then he calls Mike and Mike calls Howard a freak.
And Nick is reminded that Mike has basically called him a freak before.
And he suddenly realizes like, uh,
I am co-bullied with this person.
The world is bullying us for this one part of us, for this music act we like.
And his growth moment, I think, in this, if there is one, is that he realizes it's OK to be a little bit like this person.
And I'm the only person who has anything in common with this poor loner.
And I owe it to him a little bit to sort of have his back.
