I've gone through periods of more or less sex, and one of the things that has helped is that we have a robust habit of physical touch outside of sex. My parents came around eventually after I came out as a lesbian, but in the beginning I think it was tough for them to admit to their friends, co-workers, and especially extended family that their kid was queer.
