The Rand Drug Policy Research Center asked more than 10,000 adults about psychedelics.

Based on those responses, the researchers found that psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, was by far the most widely used substance.

Other popular psychedelics were MDMA, ketamine, and LSD.

While there's no single definition, generally that amounts to taking about 10 percent or less of a regular dose that would produce mind-altering effects.

Proponents of microdosing often say they do it to improve their mood, relieve anxiety and depression, or promote creativity.

However, there's not much high-quality research data on microdosing.
