I used to go to tournaments because I could play in different positions.
More often than not, I'd be cover for Gary at right-back because I could play centre-back or right-back.
It meant he didn't have to take a second-choice right-back and he couldn't bring an extra attacker.
So I always knew...
sort of what my role was in the squad.
I can't say I really enjoyed my England career, really.
I loved playing through all the junior teams.
I mean, I started with England at 14, going to the national school.
Loved that.
Loved playing for the England under-16s.
I was captain of the under-21s at times.
Went to a World Youth Cup in Malaysia for the under-20s.
I loved all that because I felt a real big part of it.
I was either, as I say, captain or vice-captain.
I was always in the team.
And when I got to the full squad, it's,
it's the only team in my life I didn't play for or establish myself in from the age of five or six, whatever team I was involved in, you know, at school, Sunday league level, then going to Liverpool, England.
I always played and that's why I never sort of really got the same enjoyment or fulfilment really when I, when I played for England really.
But,
I'm not sure I was good enough to be a regular when Gary mentioned some of the names he just mentioned in terms of John Terry and Rio Ferdinand.
