British Prime Minister Keir Starmer's chief of staff, Morgan McSweeney, has quit under pressure over his role in the appointment of Peter Mendelsohn, a friend of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, as ambassador to the U.S.

McSweeney, a longtime protege of Mendelsohn, says he was wrong to help him get the ambassadorship.

Mendelsohn resigned from the House of Lords after the latest release of emails from the Epstein files, and Starmer fired him from his diplomatic post last fall over his connection to Epstein.

At the Winter Olympics in Italy, the AP reports American skier Lindsey Vonn underwent surgery on a broken left leg after she crashed badly just 13 seconds into her downhill run.

She was skiing just over a week after tearing the ACL in her left knee.

The 41-year-old already holds a gold medal in the downhill race from the 2010 Olympics.

Her teammate Breezy Johnson won the gold medal in that event, the first U.S.

medal in the Games.
