This is Jeff McCracken.
I'm talking about David Kendall.
As a showrunner and director, David was a calm, guiding force for everyone.
He never sought the spotlight or threw his weight around.
He simply loved the action of giving birth to his show and sharing in that collaboration.
It goes without saying that he was beloved by the writing staff and all those who worked with him.
And he was adored by the cast and crew because he always respected them
and their creative process.
And he never hesitated to find a better way of telling the story or finding the humor in a moment.
He was smart, pragmatic, and funny.
He always had a can-do spirit and an enthusiasm that was simply infectious.
I remember David's first directing experience on Boy Meets World.
It was the last episode of season two.
And the only thing he directed prior to that was a film he wrote like 10 years prior.
And I remember he was like a kid in a candy store.
I never saw him so happy.
Not only did he get to shape the writing as an executive producer, but he also got to play in the sandbox with the actors and crew to personally make it come alive.
He was a natural at directing.
You could definitely see he was in his element, something that he really enjoyed doing.
In fact, while a student at Wesleyan University, he happened to direct my wife in a short comedic play that he'd written.
