The school played rugby, which I didn't like at all.

I preferred soccer.

So we played football a bit amongst other kids around the place.

But I was not very good at either, but I enjoyed it.

We had cricket at school, which I didn't mind that so much.

But the thing I did enjoy was cross-country running.

Did a lot of that.

Yeah, you sort of go running off.

So you go running off in the country in ploughed fields and all those sort of things.

Feeling frustrated about lots of things in the world, getting worried about nuclear weapons and war.

And you're hearing about this in newspapers or radio?

Radio and newspapers, yeah.

They had the Guardian and my brother bought the Daily Worker, Morningstar, as it then became.

Yeah, so I was becoming... I was also very interested in environmental things from quite a young age and doing all of that.

So I wasn't really very interested in exams and... Doing progress in school.

So I kind of... When we did O-levels, I really wasn't very interested in it.

I failed most of them.

The only one I did... The three I did good at were English literature, which I really enjoyed, and...

History and geography.
