But when I'm on stage, there's a illusion.
I'm the one that's playing.
I'm playing a show and the audience are just sitting there passively.
But actually, there's a very performative element to being in an audience.
Maybe it's more obvious when you go and see a rock and roll show and everyone's singing along and hands in the air and Bruce Springsteen says, how are you doing?
And everyone goes, yeah.
Everyone is playing and everything people seem to care about in life involves play.
So you go from music to film, to comedy, to sports, it's play.
We like watching people play and we like to play along with them.
And I think it's incredibly important
I think we need more of that because I think actually the great advantage of humanity is that our great skill is cooperation.
And the idea that cooperation is actually downstream from play.
That's how we learn to cooperate.
We learn to get on.
And in a world where we're ever more isolated, it seems that that's the thing that's missing.
That's the thing people... Why are people so excited about going to festivals and going to comedy shows and going out to see sports matches?
It's, I suppose, first and second order thinking is how it works a lot of the time.
