I think you know, before I was elected to the Senate, I ran a business that produced investigations of official corruption, war crimes, human rights abuses.
Oftentimes, those investigations expose wrongdoing in closed societies under authoritarian governments.
We worked with whistleblowers and witnesses who had to work in the shadows to expose wrongdoing in places where there was not freedom of the press, where reporting the truth invited official retribution.
And increasingly, the atmosphere in Donald Trump's America reminds me of the atmosphere in countries like those.
If you look at what's happening to the press in the United States, if you look at what's been happening in Minneapolis and then you read the bill of rights,
right, our founding document that guarantees freedom of speech and assembly, which protects our bodies and our homes against invasion without judicial warrant, which affords everybody due process.
This administration's policy is in direct opposition to the Bill of Rights.
Look, I think the vile, despicable racism on display continues to plumb even new and lower depths.
But I think here's what people are recognizing.
History is calling the question, what kind of a country are we?
And this year, our nation has pivotal decisions to make, and it's gonna come down to what the people say.
