You're doing that so they don't get hit by a car and die.
You're doing it to protect them from themselves because they're not listening and they're not doing what it is you're telling them to do.
And it's not an ego trip that you're punishing them.
It's for their own good.
You can tell the kid his whole life, don't put your hand on that stove, son, or it will burn your hand.
He will not believe you until one day he lays his hand on that stove and takes the skin off his hand.
That is correct.
And he'll never touch it again.

My son, he was about nine, laid his hand down on that, and I had to go to the hospital and scrape all the skin off.
