And what the meditation practice does is it allows us to hold it in such a way that we don't fall into despair. But that we realize that, hey, things are constantly changing. We don't know how the future is going to unfold. We can be really frightened by our own thoughts about how the future is going to unfold. But that's where the liberation comes in.

If you are in the present moment, in the face of everything I've just said, then you can also find equanimity and compassion and kindness right in this moment. And the kind of clarity that allows you to, say, tilt things in the direction of at least in your family, not being a pain in the butt, but maybe being kind when your impulse is to be angry or just impatient.

And when it comes right down to it, it's a radical act. It's a radical act to stop and drop into the present moment and just be open the way Thoreau was saying.
