The Portland Police Bureau says the incident occurred around 3 a.m.
at the Multnomah Athletic Club near downtown.
They say the man tried but failed to explode large propane tanks.
Police later found the man dead inside the building, but haven't released his identity or cause of death.
Portland Police Sergeant Jim Dufresne says bomb squads had to be called in to clear the dozens of explosives throughout the building.
Officials say they do not believe this was an act of terrorism.

President Trump has said that violent protests outside the Portland Ice Building left the city, quote, "...war-ravaged and threatened the safety of federal employees."
But Judge Karen Emmerget, a Trump appointee, said in her ruling that protests had generally been peaceful since June, with fewer than 20 protesters on average.
Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield celebrated the decision in a press conference and called it a healthy check on the president's power.
The judge could extend a restraining order on October 17th.
