Dude, I did a show. Tommy, Tommy, move, bro. No, Tommy's great. I did a show called Turner and Hooch on Disney+. It was like the movie. It was a Tom Hanks movie from the 80s about a hard-charging detective and his crime-fighting dog. And this was 150 pounds. Don't worry, it's canceled. This was a 150-pound French dog du bardo, right? A French mastiff.

So I'd spent this time getting ready and I felt really solid about where I was at. And it was all to get to this point where I was like, listen, I have no idea if I will have the ability of like the people that I admire. But at least I'll know that I did everything in my power to have all the tools. So I can never say, oh, like I didn't do enough. I did enough.

So the audition comes, and it's a monologue, basically a two-page monologue from a different movie, playing a professor who is giving this sort of dissertation about space and atoms splitting, and pretty dense, because we're auditioning to play scientists. And I work on it and I put it together and I send in the audition and I jokingly write to my agent.

I'm like, listen, I don't get parts like this, but I think this is pretty good. But, you know, call me when they're making American Pie 5. That's so funny. And I'll never forget, two weeks later, I get a text from my agent, and she writes, Nolan saw your tape. He likes you. We're in the hunt. Whoa.

This is crazy. Okay, so where were you and how did you feel? I was just in my apartment and I remember I got it. And the truth is, in this business, you have to subsist on hope. And you have to take these little signs that you should keep going. And sometimes it's just a callback. Even if you don't get the part, sometimes it's just like a really nice compliment from someone you respect.
