This would be a memorandum of understanding, an MOU, that would entail a 60-day extension to the ceasefire, during which the first 30 days Iran would commit to an unconditional reopening of the straits, a demining of the straits in exchange for some form of economic relief.
And that is a big sticking point because we just don't know yet what sort of sanctions relief or unfreezing of assets that the U.S.
are willing to offer over that timeframe.
The U.S.
saying that they acted in a defensive capacity.
They shot down four drones that were being directed at a U.S.
commercial vessel.
They also went on to target a drone launching sites in Iran as well at close to the port of Bandar Abbas, which is very close to the Strait of Hormuz.
In return, Iran saying that they would strike back at a U.S.
military base.
And around the same time, Kuwait reported that their air defense system had been triggered.
Neither side are showing an inclination of taking this one step further.
We haven't had follow-up comments from Iran.
There's been no official commentary about exactly what happened with those U.S.
strikes.
And at the same time, the diplomatic track continues.
And we know that the Iranian Speaker of the House, Mohammad Ghalibaf, alongside the Iranian Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqshi, are actually in Doha, in Qatar today, to continue with those diplomatic discussions.
One of the reasons that President Trump pushed back this trip in the first place by, I think it's six weeks or so,
was because of the conflict that was going on in the background.
And so the hope probably from his perspective was that it would be all wrapped up and ready and behind him so that he could approach this meeting with Xi Jinping and address other thorny topics.
