How do you even afford that?

She couldn't afford a lawyer.

So once the police learn about the history between Jermaine and Michael, the possessiveness, the custody battles, all the domestic abuse that had been occurring, and not to mention the fact that Michael was the last one seen with her, changed his story about that night and had her phone after she vanished.

in the morning, she disappeared.

Things are not looking good for Michael's case at this point.
