How did you get to Timor?

The military dictatorship in Portugal was overthrown and it was making its transition to democracy.

Which meant Portugal was pulling out of East Timor, which then set all those events in train.

So you arrived in Timor just what?

I have to ask, Kate, this is one of the most poor nations in the world.

It's very Catholic.

It's about to go through an extraordinary political turmoil.

What on earth did they make out of a bunch of drug-addled hippies walking from village to village?

Oh, that worked out well and you thought, someone says, oh, let's walk across Timor.

So then from there you hopped over to Bali and this is when your straighty 180 period, such as it was, came to an end.
