I didn't have my licence.
I did actually think I got my licence then, only two of us had our licences.
And we would drive it around town and it would break down and we'd get the crank handle out and we just had such a good time.
Did you go out then and, like, party as well?
We did, but, you know, in the nurse's home we had to ask permission to go out.
And we were 17, but we had to ask to go.
And there were other girls there that were 20 because the nursing training was for three years, three and a half actually.
So there were lots of girls at different ages, but we had to ask permission to go out.
And we were allowed one overnight leave and you had to have somewhere to stay, like your girlfriend's parents, or you could stay out till 10.30.
But of course, we broke those rules all the time.
Oh, I can't remember, but we would stay out after 10.30.
And what we did, we'd crawl up the fire escape and knock on the window of one of our other mates and push the window up and they'd let you in.
It's been significant, that nursing training, because those friends I had have been my friends for life.
I went back in February and caught up with only about half a dozen.
And there were things they told me that I hadn't remembered, which were quite moving for me.
Because what happened, Ruby, was, as you know, I got pregnant.
Very stupidly, had no idea really.
