So they found some way.
I went and lived with my brother in the North Island for the rest of the pregnancy.
My brother and his wife were having a baby at the same time, which was very difficult.
And I went into labour and delivered this baby boy, which I wasn't allowed to look at.
They said, you can't look at him.
I said, I will look at him.
And I did, but then they took him away.
But just going back a step, Ruby, when I was there waiting for him to be born, I went to the antenatal classes.
I don't know why, but I did.
What they told us then was if you're doing the right thing, give your baby up.
Get on with your life.
Give your baby a better life.
He'll get two parents.
They'll be able to bring him up, give him a wonderful life.
I found out later that wasn't totally true about lots of those babies, but that's another story.
When I went into the hospital one day to do my antenatal class, this matron, she looked old to me, but she was probably only 50.
She said, come here.
